5 years ago may have been a bad time to start a company, but the Xylem Interactive principals were too busy changing what it meant to have a corporate website to care. Xylem Interactive was learning how to prove to us that great online design takes its cues from great storytelling mediums. They knew about that jarring moment in a film that grabs you unconsciously, where a world is created for you to lose yourself in; one that is alive, like a theatre or a Monty Python Flying Circus collage, where the characters roam giddily in a fluid, brand aquarium. You see, Xylem creates actual places. They wanted back then, as they do now, for you to feel as if you could just casually... walk right in. Please close the door behind you. Yes, you’re invited. And while you’re here let me show you some stuff, tell you some jokes, and engage you in a humanizing show-and-tell about who we are; because that’s what makes this world meaningful to the both of us, isn’t it? This is Xylem’s true innovation: a model for an online culture. This is where cool aesthetics, PC belief systems, and fun and excellent food first appeared as a cultural entertainment package through the fantastically lauded Chipotle website.

( Back Story )
Xylem Interactive knows how to tell a story. Responsible for the Chipotle Web Site, Xylem wanted to describe their storytelling process to the Graphic Design Community. This article also became an excellent way for Xylem to reach out to their own community, for new talent, for a presence in the design community.

"I’ve worked with Joseph Coplans for many years and over that time I’ve witnessed Joseph produce some amazing results. Results in eloquent, intelligent and targeted copy. We have served together on the AIGA Colorado - the professional association for design, Board of Directors. He was instrumental in establishing a relationship with the Denver Office of Cultural Affairs (DOCA), which helped AIGA CO secure Mayor John Hickenlooper for speaking at the AIGA National Design Conference as its Keynote in October 2007."
